Hi Everyone, I thought I would share some of the new products and trends that I saw at CHA 2016 with all of you. I am also having a GIVEAWAY of the products that I used in my CHA class. Please grab a cup of your favorite beverage and join me!
CHA, aka the Craft Hobby Association, is “THE” show to go to learn about upcoming trends and products in the arts and crafts industry. While the show is for business professionals and not open to the general public, the floor is packed with people the entire show. It is the biggest show of it’s kind in the US and generally takes a few days to “see” everything there. All the big name artists and companies are there demoing their new products covering everything from paper crafting to painting to fabric arts.
It is so exciting to attend the show and see all the new products that are being released in the upcoming year. I wanted to share with you some products and trends that really stood out to me while I walked the floor. First, I must say that the most obvious trend that I saw is that paper crafting is crossing over to mixed media painting. Mixed media painting is sizzling! While journaling is still very hot, mixed media has gotten more sophisticated and has moved to frame able paper and canvas art. Many of the big name companies and artists that have created inks for years are now crossing over and creating paints, stencils, and various other tools. I think it was a natural progression as paper crafters started creating amazing scrapbook pages that they would want to continue to grow. It has evolved into an art. The picture that I am sharing below is a great example of this progression.
While there were still many paper companies there, there were less than previous years. Just a few years ago the show was all about paper crafting and now painting is the growing craft. The most popular tools that I saw were stencils, new artist inspired paints, foils, coloring book markers, art crayons, and mixed media mediums. However out of all of those stencils are leading the pack!
Another trend that is very hot is adult coloring books. They were everywhere! What was exciting to me was all the products that have emerged because of this trend. There are new markers that act like water color paints, pens that can be blended, crayons that can be applied and then blended with water, and colored pencils that are blend able. While these are all amazing for coloring books they lend themselves to painting as well as many can go right over acrylic paints.
While stencils are hot for creating art and paper crafting, they are now part of the home décor craze. DecoArt released their new 18 inch stencils for home décor this year. They also released a variety of other products that once again makes them a leader not only in painting, but in DIY home décor as well. Check out their new logo… I just love it!
It was so much fun to see the Society of Decorative Painting there again this year. They had such an active booth that was packed the entire show. It was awesome to see young attendees having a great time while they painted the “make and take its”. All of the projects and teaching was done by volunteers from the local chapters. They all did an amazing job!
I was very honored to teach a painting class at the show representing the Society. I know all the students had a blast and loved learning how to paint.
I also had so much fun demoing in Stampendous’s booth. I must say that the paper crafters enjoyed what I was demoing and were eager to learn how to paint with stamps and stencils.
These are just highlights of what stood out to me at the show. I wanted to share a video of some of the things I saw at CHA including all of DecoArt’s new products and colors! You can see some of the items that will be in the crafts stores soon …. just click on the photo below and enjoy!
